My mom is nearing 80, and has been experiencing greater difficulty with her joints. Getting into the shower is especially hard for her, so I’ve been looking for devices that will help improve her grip and stability. This tub-mounted rail seemed like something that could also help her get up and down from her shower stool, so I wanted to test it out.Build quality is good, and the entire rail feels solidly made. The design is simple but effective, employing two grip pads and bolt-style closure. Mounting it is simple in theory, but can take some fiddling in practice.Once you have it in place on the tub wall you simply have to turn the knob to tighten it, but I found that left some play in the grip and allowed it to rock a bit. Instead, I found it better to give the knob a few turns, then shake the rail back and forth a few times before tightening it again. That allows it to seat better and makes for a much more stable grip. The knob itself is made of hard plastic and might be difficult for seniors to tighten fully, so a little assistance may be needed. It’s reassuring to know it’s rated up to 300 pounds, but I wish it had a rubberized grip. The metal is fine when dry but could be a tad slippery for wet hands. I may add a little hockey tape to it to remedy that. Regardless, my mom is very happy with it, and it makes me feel better to know she has a secure rail to lean on when needed. At $79.00 this is quite expensive compared to most similar handles I’ve seen on Amazon. Most of those run in the $55 range, and this doesn’t appear to be much different in terms of design or weight capacity. It’s definitely a quality device, but I think it would be a good idea to compare a few different products before making a purchase. My rating: 3.5 stars
